About SWE3

SWE3 is the Swedish federation for American football, flag football, field hockey, baseball, softball, and lacrosse. We work to develop our sports and clubs and to create an environment where all our athletes can grow, both as players and as individuals. We are active internationally while remaining firmly rooted in the values of the Swedish sports movement.

The mission of SWE3 is to promote, develop, and govern American football, flag football, field hockey, baseball, softball, and lacrosse in Sweden, to represent these sports internationally, and to work to make them accessible to everyone.

Our motto is “Sweden’s best sports community!” We want to be an open federation where all sports and athletes are welcome. We aim to foster a strong community with a clear focus on both grassroots and elite sport, where our six sports can grow and develop together.

Our goal is for everyone, regardless of age or level of ambition, to have the opportunity to participate in one of our sports in a safe and accessible environment, at the level that suits them and as close to home as possible.

Our history

SWE3 was formed in 2022 through a merger of the Swedish American Football Federation and the Swedish Field Hockey Federation. The Swedish American Football Federation was founded in 1984, while the Swedish Field Hockey Federation was founded in 1975.

In 2025, SWE3 merged with the Swedish Baseball, Softball and Lacrosse Federation, bringing baseball, softball, and lacrosse into SWE3. The history of these sports within Swedish organised sport goes back to 1956, when the Swedish Baseball Federation was founded. Softball was added in 1979 and lacrosse in 2021.

The ambition when SWE3 was established was to create a modern and sustainable multi-sport federation with the capacity to grow and develop over time. The 2025 merger was another major step in that direction.

SWE3’s six sports all share a strong sense of passion and community while operating with relatively limited resources. They are largely driven by volunteers, often by people who combine several roles as coaches, administrators, officials, and other key contributors within their clubs. It is from this reality that the need for a new and stronger structure has emerged. Through the merger between SWE3 and the Swedish Baseball, Softball and Lacrosse Federation, we are making a deliberate and strategic investment in the future of our sports.

Today, SWE3 brings together almost 100 clubs, with activities in more than 60 municipalities across Sweden, as well as a total of 24 national teams.

SWE3 is still a relatively young federation, bringing together sports with long histories of their own. Our aim is to provide all six sports with a strong platform and the conditions they need to operate, grow, and develop.

Our affiliations

SWE3 is affiliated with the Swedish Sports Confederation (Riksidrottsförbundet), whose statutes and regulations form the basis of our operations.

SWE3 is also affiliated with the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) and several international federations and organisations representing our sports, including the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), EuroHockey, the International Hockey Federation (FIH), the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), WBSC Europe, and World Lacrosse.

Our sports

American football
American football is the largest and most popular sport in the United States, combining speed and physical demands with endurance, tactics, and strategy. The sport came to Sweden in the 1970s, with the first teams formed in 1982. The Swedish American Football Federation was established in 1984 and became part of SWE3 when the federation was formed in 2022.

Flag football
Flag football is a fast-paced and high-intensity sport that combines athletic ability, technique, and strategy. The sport can be played by children, young people, and adults and is growing rapidly around the world.

Field hockey
Field hockey is a fast and exciting team sport with a long international history. It is a sport for everyone, regardless of previous sporting experience or background. The Swedish Field Hockey Federation was founded in 1975 and became part of SWE3 in 2022.

Baseball
Baseball has been organised at federation level in Sweden since 1956. The sport combines individual skills such as hitting, throwing, and running with teamwork, tactics, and strategy. In 2025, baseball became part of SWE3 through the merger with the Swedish Baseball, Softball and Lacrosse Federation.

Softball
Softball has been part of organised Swedish sport since 1979. Closely related to baseball but with its own rules and characteristics, softball is a fast and tactical team sport played both in Sweden and internationally. Softball became part of SWE3 in 2025.

Lacrosse
Lacrosse is a fast-paced team sport combining speed, technique, physical ability, and tactical play. Lacrosse joined the Swedish Baseball and Softball Federation in 2021 and became part of SWE3 through the 2025 merger.
